Michael Kirby AC CMG was the Rationalist Society’s first Patron. When he retired from the High Court in 2009, Kirby was Australia’s longest serving judge. Despite remaining an Anglican, he has been an indefatigable defender of secular government, stating: “The principle of secularism is one of the greatest developments in human rights in the world. We must safeguard and protect it, for it can come under threat in contemporary Australia.”
The RSA and its Members and subscribers, and all those who support freethought and fair and decent society, heartily congratulate Michael and Johan on the occasion of their marriage, 50 years to the day after they met in 1969.
“Vigilance is what’s required in a rational society; vigilance for your own freedoms and vigilance to respect the freedoms of others.”
