Letters: Minister for Multicultural Affairs rejects multicultural prayers

Meredith Doig / 18 May 2015

In a series of letters that would make a good “Yes Minister” episode, our request to the Victorian Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Labor’s Robin Scott, to support the introduction of alternatives to the Lord’s Prayer in the Victorian parliament has finally got a clear response.

That answer is: no.

From his letter: “On a personal note, I currently support Standing Order 4.02 …”

So what is Standing Order 4.02? None other than the Lord’s Prayer.

4.02    President takes Chair when quorum present

The President will take the Chair as soon after the time appointed for the meeting of the Council as a quorum* of Members is present, and will read the Lord’s Prayer.

All the more reason.
