Genital Autonomy

The RSA maintains the view that non-consensual, medically unnecessary male circumcision and intersex genital modification constitute genital mutilation, and should be condemned. Australian society does not accept female genital mutilation to suit the cultural or religious preferences of parents, and likewise should not accept male circumcision or intersex genital modification for these reasons. Non-consensual, medically unnecessary procedures constitute gross violations of the rights of the child.

Resources

In 2017, the RSA authored a white paper on genital autonomy (here in pdf format) outlining the human rights implications of non-consensual, medically unnecessary genital cutting or modifications. We call on the medical community, as well as state and federal governments, to make immediate legislative changes to ensure the protection of all children from genital mutilation.

All the more reason.
